RATS With Backpacks: Dr. Donna Kean and Her Work at APOPO, my third book, will be launched in March 2025. This biographical science book shares the exciting training of the RescueRATs of APOPO to find survivors after a natural disaster, and the girl who grew up to be a scientist working with them.
APOPO is a global, non-profit and NGO (non-governmental organization) which researches and develops scent detection technology with African giant pouched rats, nicknamed HeroRATs, and dogs, to help save lives and improve the environment.
Please check with your local bookstore to order this book as of 3/15/25.
Behind the Book
In 2022, there were many articles written about the “Rats With Backpacks” and Dr. Donna Kean’s role in training them. I wondered if I could write a story about these cute rats with their backpacks and how they were being taught to rescue people after earthquakes. I wrote to Dr. Kean on Twitter asking her if it was okay for me to write a book about her work. She said, “Yes,” and asked me to contact Lily Shallom, the communications manager at APOPO for her permission too. Ms. Shallom also gave me her approval to proceed with the book. That was the beginning of an exciting and challenging journey as there was much to learn. I’m inspired by Donna’s story of how her love and work with animals led to her becoming a research scientist with a focus on animal behavior. And, I grew in my understanding of the APOPO organization and its humanitarian focus on teaching animals to work with people to save lives. I will be donating a portion of the royalties to APOPO. Reviews
“Get ready to learn about the life-saving power of rats and a woman who trains them! Readers will meet Donna, a female Scottish scientist, and the intelligent little helpers performing search-and-rescue missions and more. A great STEM title for upper-elementary to middle school classrooms and libraries.” (Deena Viviani, Young Adult Services Librarian, Brighton Memorial Library)
“What an inspiring story of a young woman’s love of science and her pursuit to better understand animal behavior! Dr. Kean’s story is one of family, curiosity, hard work, and a desire to make the world a better place that everyone can relate to. Everyone should learn about the incredibly cool work she has done at APOPO, and how these intelligent rats are helping to save lives.” (Dr. Calvin Uzelmeier, Director of Exhibits, Rochester Museum & Science Center)
